3rd ski day

by Marya Doery, March 5, 2012

It rained on Saturday, so I didn't go skiing over the weekend. However, it was so cold last night, I hoped they would make snow at Wachusett. No such luck! I decided to go skiing anyway. I started out on the green slopes, Sundowner and Indian Summer. I took this photo after I got off the lift to start my first run:

Doesn't it look beautiful!? The snow quality was not great, but it wasn't bad, either. They groomed last night so the surface was in pretty good shape. The snow was light and dry. There was a stiff breeze blowing up Sundowner, and there were times I really had to push to go downhill! Here's another shot of the snow:

It looks perfectly nice, but there was a little glint of ice below the fluffy stuff, here and there (if you click on the photo, it takes you to a larger image where you can see that).

I did 4-5 runs down Sundowner and Indian Summer before it started to feel too easy. I followed this with Ralph's Run - Ralph's Run - Challenger (fell) - Ralph's Run - Hitchcock Trail to Frannie's Folly (2x). After a couple of hours of skiing, I noticed more bald patches where an underlayer of ice was showing through on various trails, and decided it was time to go home.

I keep falling on Challenger! The trail narrows at the bottom when they put up the NASTAR course. With more people going down the narrower area, the top layer of snow gets pushed off, and the surface gets quite "fast." I have a lot of trouble with that, and need to figure out how to deal with it.
